Post-positions in Hindi

Prepositions in English such as from, of, to, in, before, after that come BEFORE a noun or a pronoun become post-positions such as se, kaa, ko, meN, pahale, baad meN  in Hindi and are placed AFTER the noun or the pronoun.

 

१) नमस्ते | मैं (नाम) हूँ | मैं (गाँव) से हूँ |  =  Hello. I am (name).  I am from (town).

namaste | maiN (name) hooN |  maiN (town) se hooN |

 

If your parents are from two separate towns in India, please say the following two sentences.

२) मेरी मम्मी (भारत का शहर / गाँव) से हैं | = My mother is from (town in India).

merii  mammii  (townin India) se haiN|

 

३) मेरे पापा (भारत का शहर / गाँव) से हैं | =   My father is from (town in India).

mere paapaa (town in India) se haiN|

 

If both of your parents are from the same town in India, say the following.

४) मेरे मम्मी - पापा, दोनों भी (भारत का शहर / गाँव) से हैं | = My mom and dad, both are from (town in India).

     mere parivaar meN merii mammii hai, mere paapaa hai, meraa choTaa / baRaa bhaai (brother's name) hai, merii choTii / baRii bahan (sister's name) hai aur maiN hoon |

 

२) मेरे नाना - नानी (गाँव का नाम) में रहते हैं | =  My maternal grandparents live in (town's name).

३) मेरे दादा - दादी (गाँव का नाम) में रहते हैं | =   My paternal grandparents live in (town's name).

mere daadaa - daadii (town's name) meN rahate haiN|

 

४) मेरे (संख्या) चाचा, (संख्या) ताऊजी और (संख्या) मामा हैं | = I have (number) younger paternal uncle/s, (number) older paternal uncle/s and (number) maternal uncle/s.

mere (number) caacaa, (number) taauujii, (number) maamaa haiN |

 

५) मेरी (संख्या) मौसी / मौसियाँ और (संख्या) भुआ / भुआएँ हैं | = I have (number) maternal aunt/s and (number) paternal aunt/s.

२) (व्यक्ति का नाम) (गाँव का नाम ) में रहता / रहती है |  =    (person's name) lives in (town's name).

       (person's name) (town's name) meN rahataa (m) / rahatii (f) hai |

        (person's name) (town's name) in      lives.   

 

Describe what you do in habitual present tense.

 

१) मैं (खेल का नाम) खेलता / खेलती हूँ | = I play (name of the sport).

      maiN ( name of the sport / game) khelataa (m) / khelatii (f) hooN |

      I          (name of the sport / game) play.

 

२) मैं (वाद्य का नाम) बजाता / बजाती हूँ | = I play (name of the instrument).

3) The sentence order in Hindi is subject + object + verb.

 

4) The verb always comes in the end, whether it is a statement or a question.

 

Below is some of the vocabulary we used in class 1.

नमस्ते |     namaste.    Hello.

मैं  हूँ |           maiN   huuN.            I  am.

तुम हो |    tum (for peers)   ho.   You are.

आप हैं |        aap (for parents, grandparents, strangers, authority)   haiN. You are.

कहाँ ?           kahaaN  ?      where ?

क्या ?             kyaa ?                 what  ?

कितने ?        kitane ?               how many ?

लड़का           laRakaa              boy

5) मेरे / मेरी दोस्त का नाम (नाम) है | = My friend's name is (friend's name).

Questions to ask others.

 

१) तुम्हारा नाम क्या है ?   =        What is your name ?
